After nearly 20 years serving the residents of Iberia Parish as an employee of the Assessor’s office, Ashlie Myers Spiker was sworn in as Iberia Parish Assessor in January, 2024, replacing outgoing Assessor Taylor Barras, who was named Commissioner of Administration for the Office of the Governor.
Spiker, who served as Barras’s Chief Deputy for the last three years, is running for Assessor in November, 2024 to ensure that legacy of conservative leadership will continue in the Assessor’s office, demonstrating proven leadership, experience, integrity and commitment.
Her assessing career began in 2005, and during her 19 years as an employee of the Assessor’s office, she remained dedicated and loyal to the work, responsibilities, staff and residents of Iberia Parish. Spiker worked in several departments, gaining an unrivaled advantage of experience, mastering skills with all relevant software successfully passing annual ratio studies performed by the Louisiana Tax Commission. She assisted and performed numerous revaluations for our parish from 2008-2024, and worked closely with parish officials, legislative auditors, tax commissioners, other assessors throughout the state, taxing districts, local attorneys, real estate agents and of course our taxpayers.
As Chief Deputy she worked side by side with Barras, learning what it takes to effectively lead the Assessor’s office. Together, they implemented several successful changes to policies, maintained a conservative budget, administered the office with efficiency and provided transparency while maintaining excellent customer service to the public. As a conservative who believes in being fiscally responsible, she will run the office with that same efficiency, while always protecting and respecting taxpayer dollars.
Spiker achieved the designation of a Certified Louisiana Assessor, which is accredited by the International Association of Assessing Officers. This is a certification of excellence among professionals working in property valuation, property tax policy and setting the standards for mass appraisal. She is actively involved in the Louisiana Assessor’s Association, and was appointed to serve on the Legislative, Oil & Gas and Professional Development Committees.
As a lifelong resident of Iberia Parish, Spiker is proud to be part of a community filled with charming character, fascinating history, cultural diversity, and most of all- great people. She has been married to her husband Heath, owner of Spiker Masonry, for 23 years, they have four children and are parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in New Iberia. She is a Jeanerette native, where she attended St. Joseph’s Catholic school, and continued her education at Hanson Memorial and finally the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
In addition to her work as a member of the Louisiana Assessors Association, Spiker is an active civic leader in Iberia Parish, and is a graduate of Leadership Iberia Class XXIV. She is a member of the Coastal Conservation Association, Kiwanis Club, Home Builders Association and the Krewe of Andalusia, former member of Les Jeune Amis ladies club, and both Ashlie and her husband Heath have given their time to the Wounded Warrior Project.
